Philip Serrell auctioneers were fortunate to find an elegant 19th Century oil painting by Italian artist Matteo Lovatti in a local property.

Lovatti, born in 1861, was from an aristocratic Roman family, and inherited his love of art from his architect father Matteo Lovatti (1769-1849). Lovatti exhibited in his native city of Rome from 1877. The smallest of the family’s many grand residencies, the Villa Lovatti in Rome, is situated in the gardens of the Russian Ambassador’s residence, the Villa Abamelek.

The subject and quality of the painting titled ‘le Journee de Derby’ attracted international interest and it was sold to a telephone bidder for £36,000 plus 24% (VAT inclusive) Buyers Premium
