Auctions would not be auctions without a surprise and in our March sale, two samplers by Mary Rollings and her sibling Christian Rollings, provided that surprise.  Modestly estimated, they sold for a satisfying and surprising £6,200.

The Objets d'Art section of a sale always has an eclectic mix of lots.  The variety on offer this time was demonstrated by a small marble sculpture of a dog playing with a lizard by Gott, which sold for £3,200, and a pair of Liberty & Co terracotta planters by Archibald Knox, which sold for £13,200.  These planters were decorated with a band of Celtic knot, a design which is ever popular today.
